Kolosa Jiu Jitsu Academy based in Honokaa, Hawai’i was founded in 2022 by Douglas “Toki” and Sheena Nakata. Professor Toki is a black belt and Coach Sheena is a brown belt under Professor Kawika Yoneda, owner of Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy. Kolosa Jiu Jitsu Academy is a proud affiliate of ATOS Hilo.

Professor Toki has been training Jiu Jitsu for over 15 years. He started his Jiu Jitsu journey in Maui under Professor Luis Heredia, where he received his blue belt. After moving back home to the Big Island, he began training under Professor Kiah Petrie, where he recieved his purple and brown belt. Years later, he found himself at Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy, where he received his black belt from Professor Kawika Yoneda in April 2022. Toki was always interested in martial arts, but after years of trying different arts, he developed a passion for Jiu Jitsu. Before moving to Maui, Toki had a friend who visited him from Georgia, who introduced him to the sport. His friend was skilled in Jiu Jitsu and after sparring many rounds with his friend, Toki couldn’t believe how many times he got submitted. This gave him drive and desire to learn the art of Jiu Jitsu. Shortly after moving to Maui, he went to his first Jiu Jitsu academy. His interest sparked as he learned the technical aspect of Jiu Jitsu. He enjoyed the hard training and dedication, and was motivated by the progress he could see on the mats. He also enjoyed the relationships he built being at an academy. He competed in many tournaments island wide and also helped to coach adult and kids classes after moving home. With a desire to continue expanding his knowledge and technical aspect of Jiu Jitsu, he began training at Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy. Here, he found his level of Jiu Jitsu elevate under instruction of Professor Kawika and developed a family with the members and staff of Roma. It had always been a dream to one day open an academy, where he could share his years of knowledge with others and to give back to his community. By the grace of God, opening Kolosa Jiu Jitsu Academy has allowed his dreams to become a reality.

Coach Sheena was introduced to Jiu Jitsu by her husband Toki. He would always practice his Jiu Jitsu techniques with her. Each time he practiced a move, she would ask him to teach it to her. The technical aspect has always sparked interest for Sheena. The first academy she attended was KP academy in 2009, where she recieved her blue and purple belt under Professor Kiah Petrie. Years later she started training at Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy under instruction of Professor Kawika Yoneda, where she received her brown belt. Sheena and Toki has built a family at Roma JJA. Sheena enjoys not only the technical aspect of the art, but also likes to see the progress that comes from the hard work and dedication she puts in on the mats. She enjoys coaching children and adults in Jiu Jitsu. Like her husband Toki, it has been a dream to share her knowledge of Jiu Jitsu with others. She feels Jiu Jitsu is not only a lifelong journey for her, but it has changed her life in many positive ways. She believes God led her to Jiu Jitsu for a reason. With the opening of Kolosa Jiu Jitsu Academy, she can serve her purpose of supporting her husband’s dreams, while sharing her love for Jiu Jitsu with others.

Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy was founded in 2016 by Professor Kawika and Jamie Yoneda. Their academy has brought many new opportunities and connections to athletes here on the Big Island. Through their modern, detailed and innovative techniques, and the high quality curriculum, their team has grown and reached top levels of jiu jitsu. We are proud to be the first affiliate of Roma Jiu Jitsu Academy.
